Anjali D'Souza
Anjali D’Souza’s paintings have been inspired by two extreme and contrasting landscapes – the wild, remote, primitive beauty of the Outer Hebridean Isles, with its ancient mountains of Lewisian Gneis, limpid inland lochs and pounding Atlantic seas; and, in contrast, the heat and vibrance of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, particularly memorable for having been explored on camel-back, and the brilliance of the desert night sky. These are landscapes which have moved and inspired her and to which she has returned. In her paintings the external landscape becomes a vehicle for the expression of an internal landscape of the emotions, infinitely varied — at times raw, harsh and uncompromising, at others wistful and melancholy or exuberant. These are a selection of her oil paintings spanning five years, where more recently, she has begun to explore an increasingly abstract style.
